Working Mother & Flex-Time Lawyers Best Law Firms for Women Survey

INTRODUCTION
The Working Mother & Flex-Time Lawyers Best Law Firms for Women initiative surveys practices at U.S. law firms with 50 or more lawyers. Working Mother Media initially launched the initiative with Flex-Time Lawyers in 2007. The initiative follows in the tradition of the groundbreaking Working Mother 100 Best Companies, which was first introduced in 1986 and continues to help set the standard for family-friendly workplaces.

The list of top firms for women will be published in Working Mother magazine and on workingmother.com and flextimelawyers.com. The winning firms will be honored at a special awards event.

OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this initiative is to celebrate the law firms that are most successful in their efforts and results with women lawyers. We will highlight what these firms are doing to retain and promote women lawyers with the hope that these winning firms’ successful programs will be implemented across the profession. The goal is also to give law firms the benchmarking tools that they need to improve the status of women in their firms in the future.

INCENTIVE
There are a number of compelling reasons why your firm should participate in this initiative.

First, the results of the survey will be an invaluable tool for firms, not only to let them know where they stand but, more importantly, to help them improve their future standing. This will be achieved by providing all applicant law firms with valuable and confidential feedback on their own performance. All participating firms will receive a scorecard that provides a snapshot and the firm's ranking in each of the key areas of the application, compared to all applicants. Law firms will also have the opportunity to purchase benchmarking reports providing a more in-depth analysis of their firm’s results, revealing how to make their firms better places for women to work and thrive.

Second, rather than surveying female practicing lawyers, we will collect hard data from the law firms themselves. The survey will include questions about female representation, women’s initiatives, workplace culture, networking, flexibility, mentoring, compensation, partnership and advancement. Thus, the scoring will be determined by female presence, roles, policies, programs and usage rates, as reported by the law firms.

Third, there is no risk to apply because the identity of the applicant law firms, other than those that make the Best Law Firms for Women list, will be kept confidential. All data provided in the scorecard to non-winning firms, aside from the information addressed to a specific applicant firm, is aggregate and anonymous. Additionally, the winners who make the list will not be ranked but instead, listed alphabetically.

Fourth, the winners will be marketed to law students nationally and the list will be used as a recruiting tool to select prospective employers. The winners will also be publicized to general counsels from around the country so that they can celebrate firms that are focused on women’s success.

Fifth, the initiative is free and an important means for a firm to distinguish itself if it becomes a winner. When the market turns around, firms will be more cautious about monetary enticements to recruit and retain talent. In turn, firms that continue to prioritize culture and environment will be better positioned to differentiate themselves.

ELIGIBILITY
All law firms with a total of 50 or more lawyers in the United States are invited to participate in this survey.

REGISTRATION 
All law firms will need to register before accessing the online application. Registration is free, and there is no obligation to complete the application after registration. To register, simply fill out the information below. When the application goes live in November 2014, registered law firms will receive an email with a link to the survey. Please note: if a law firm registers more than once, or if multiple persons from a firm register, the firm will NOT receive multiple invitations. Be sure to complete only one application per law firm.
